Because much of the country’s total land area is flat, low-lying, fertile, and well-irrigated, rice grows better here than practically anywhere else in the world. Rice farming, moreover, has been the main occupation of the majority of Thais for centuries. Even now, Thai rice farmers constitute the backbone of the country’s agricultural economy.
